Leros island is one of the 12
main Dodecanese islands, located between Patmos and
Kalymnos in the South east Part of the Aegean sea.
Its surface is about 54 square kilometers with a
length of 15 km and a least width of 1,5 km about.
Its coast line is about 46 kilometers, there are a
few smaller islands around Leros ideal for daily
excursions. Leros
has a very good infrastructure that makes easy to
the visitor to go around the island by car or by
scooter. Leros is the Green island of Dodecanese
.Tamarisk, Eukalipt, Lemon Orange and Pine trees,
gardens with roses and boucavilies making Leros a
Paradise in the Aegean sea.
The travel to Leros can
be either from Athens by Airplane or Piraeus by
ferry boat, on a daily basis. The island has daily
connections from April to October with fast boats
(hydrofoils) with the other surrounding isles of
Dodecanese like Patmos, Kos, Kalimnos, Symi, Nisyros,
Rhodes Lipsi and Samos.
A mountainous, green island with high cliffs and
many small bays and villages, Leros is a popular
holiday resort which still has kept most of its
genuine atmosphere. One of the reasons is that it is
not too dependent on tourism.
Many of the buildings on the island are built in
Italian style, but you'll also find those typically
Greek little white houses with blue doors and
windows.
The people on the island live off agriculture, some
work in the island's mental institution, and in
summer tourism is another source of income. Because
Leros has a very large natural port, many sailing
boats and luxury yachts arrive here in summer,
giving the island an international flare.
